The Cross River State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has hosted the 2026 Humanitarian Merit Awards and Symposium, recognising individuals, organisations and institutions whose humanitarian contributions continue to impact vulnerable persons and communities across the State.
The event, held in Calabar, brought together government officials, development partners, humanitarian actors and stakeholders to celebrate outstanding service while strengthening conversations around humanitarian response, social protection, community resilience and inclusive development.
Representing His Excellency, Governor Bassey Edet Otu, the Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Mrs. Lawrencia Ita, commended the initiative and urged the Ministry to ensure that humanitarian interventions remain focused on measurable outcomes and tangible improvements in the lives of vulnerable citizens.
The Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Helen Isamoh, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening partnerships and expanding interventions that promote resilience, empowerment and sustainable livelihoods among vulnerable populations.
The awards further reflect the People First philosophy of the Bassey Edet Otu administration, reaffirming its commitment to placing the welfare, dignity and wellbeing of citizens at the heart of governance.
They also highlight the vital role of individuals, organisations and development partners in complementing government efforts towards building a more inclusive, resilient and compassionate Cross River State.
A major highlight of the occasion was the presentation of food items and essential household items to vulnerable families, providing immediate relief and support to households facing economic hardship
